Portuguese court okays Monica Bedi's extradition

December 01, 2003 14:01 IST

A high court in Portugal has approved  the extradition of Monica Bedi, little-known Bollywood actress and girlfriend
of underworld don Abu Salem, to India.

The official communication was received by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday, agency sources said in New Delhi.

The order was issued after the Portuguese supreme court asked the high court to review the trial court order
quashing a CBI petition for her extradition to India, they said.

Monica Bedi was also awarded a two-year jail term by a lower Portuguese court for entering Portugal on a forged document and continuing to use the same document for staying on in that country.

The court also held Salem 'guilty' of three offences, including entering the country on forged documents, and
awarded him a four-and-a-half year jail term.

Monica Bedi has the right to appeal against the order in the Portuguese supreme court.
