August 29, 2003 11:39 IST

Security forces on Friday averted a major tragedy by the timely recovery of a RDX-fitted improvised explosive device (IED) in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said in Jammu.

On a tip-off, security forces launched a search operation to trace the bomb planted by militants to target an army convoy on the Jammu-Doda road, they said.

After an hour-long search, troops recovered the two-kg RDX-fitted IED from Tundura area on the road and defused it, the sources added.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is in Jammu on a day's visit.
