Probe ordered into destruction of files: Fernandes

August 21, 2003 19:44 IST

The Indian Army has ordered a probe into the alleged destruction of files containing sensitive documents about financial irregularities by some senior officers, Defence Minister George Fernandes told Lok Sabha on Thursday.

"The defence ministry is seized of the matter and the army has ordered a court of inquiry," he said after Indian Union Muslim League member E Ahamed referred to a newspaper report on the issue.

Fernandes said the findings of the inquiry were expected soon and action, if needed, would be taken.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour, Ahamed quoted the newspaper report to say that some army officers at the Army Headquarters had committed a security breach by allegedly destroying 90 files.

The Muslim League member alleged that the officers destroyed the files after getting the office opened on a public holiday. The shredded files were removed in gunnybags, he said.
