10, including jawan, killed in J&K

Ten people, including a jawan and six militants, were killed in Jammu and Kashmir since Tuesday night. Besides this, an ultra was arrested along with 10kg of RDX while militants attacked a police station and a shop hosting a private cable network in the state since Tuesday night, police said in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Three militants, including a self-styled commander of the Al Badr militant outfit Umeer Pathan of Pakistan, were killed in two separate encounters with security forces at Badi-Jehlan and Arah forest areas in Anantnag district, a spokesman said. Three AK assault rifles, nine magazines and four hand grenades were recovered from the slain militants, he said and identified the two other ultras as Abu Sahil of Pakistan and Reyaz Ahmad Lone.

The spokesman said two more militants, one of them a Pakistani, were killed by security forces in an encounter at Pathushahi village in Kupwara district.

In another encounter, he said, police killed wanted militant Arshad Ahmad in a shootout on Tuesday night at Kidwah village in Udhampur district.

A jawan was killed and another injured when militants opened fire on a security patrol at Beri forest area in Poonch district on Tuesday night.

A civilian, Nazir Ahmad Gujree, who was injured in a blast at Bandipora in Baramulla district on August 13, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.

The spokesman said body of one Lal Din was recovered from Naristan in Pulwama district on Wednesday. The deceased had been abducted and then shot dead by militants.

Police also picked up an unidentified body from Dasmar Nallah in Rajouri district on Wednesday, he said.

In other incidents, militants of the Al-umar Mujahideen on Wednesday evening hurled a grenade on a police station in downtown Srinagar but it fell short of the target and exploded near the main gate, the spokesman said.

Militants on Tuesday night also hurled a grenade on a shop housing a private cable network at Sopore in Baramulla district, causing minor damage to the equipment, he said.

In Pulwama district in south Kashmir, a tragedy was averted with the timely detection of an Improvised Explosive Device, planted by militants near Sheerabad in Tral area, the spokesman said.

In Gadole area of Anantnag district, Border Security Force personnel apprehended a militant along with 10kg of RDX, two grenades and a detonator.

The BSF also recovered 40 hand grenades, 2,940 rounds of AK ammunition and 80 sticks of plastic explosives during an operation at Tangdhar in Kupwara district, he said.

Security forces smashed another militant hideout at Pangai in Thanamandi sector of Rajouri district.
