Ahead of the crucial trial of strength on Saturday, beleaguered Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Mukut Mithi asked Governor V C Pande to postpone the special assembly session in the wake of a petition challenging the Speaker's order recognising the United Democratic Front.

The UDF was formed by a breakaway group of 38 MLAs of the ruling Congress party.

The governor had told Mithi to prove his majority following a split in the Congress, which earlier had 59 MLAs in the 60-member House.

The chief minister said Speaker Tamiyo Taga's order recognising the splinter group was not legally tenable as he was one of the MLAs who resigned from the Congress.

The Congress has raised this point before the Itanagar bench of the Gauhati high court.

Mithi has urged the governor to put off the session pending a ruling by the court on the petition.

Meanwhile, the high court has found some technical faults and directed the Congress to amend its plea.

Justice H K K Singh of the single-judge bench on Friday told the petitioner, Health and Family Welfare Minister Hari Notung, to file a fresh petition on Monday.
