April 30, 2003 15:32 IST

A group of Rashtriya Janata Dal activists, led by panchayat mukhia Reet Lal Yadav, gunned down Bharatiya Janata Party leader Satyanarayan Sinha at Jamaluddin Chak village in Patna district on Wednesday, a police spokesperson said.

The killing triggered violence in the area with Sinha's supporters indulging in arson, prompting the police to open fire, Deputy Inspector General (Provisions) and Bihar Police spokesperson Rituraj said.

Sinha, who had contested the last by-election from Danapur against RJD candidate Ramanand Yadav, had a feud with Yadav, he said.

The incident took place hours after an RJD leader, Ranvir Yadav, was killed in Patna.
