Court rejects contempt plea against R K Sharma

A New Delhi magistrate on Monday rejected an application by the police seeking the initiation of contempt proceedings against senior Indian Police Service officer Ravi Kant Sharma, prime suspect in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder, for allegedly misleading the court that his family was not allowed to meet him in custody.

"I do not intend to initiate contempt proceedings against Sharma," Metropolitan Magistrate J P Narain said and disposed of the application moved by the investigating officer.

The application followed a submission by counsel for Sharma's wife Madhu that the police had not allowed her and their daughters to meet him in custody on Saturday despite a court order. The counsel also sought fresh directions to the police to allow the meeting.

The police contended that there was no reason for them to prevent Sharma's family from meeting him. They produced newspaper clippings of Madhu in conversation with Sharma on their way from Ambala, where he had surrendered on September 27, to support their claim and sought the initiation of contempt proceedings against Sharma for misleading the court.

The court, however, rejected the plea saying the application for the meeting was moved by Sharma's family and not by him.

Later, Madhu Sharma and daughter Pragati, who came to the court following directions asking the applicants to be present, again alleged that the police had refused to allow them to meet Sharma in custody despite the court order.

"After making us wait for a long time, they refused to allow us to meet Sharma on Saturday, saying he was to be taken for medical examination," Madhu said on emerging out of the Karkardooma court.

"Later I got a call asking me to come to see him on Sunday at 12 noon. But when we turned up, we were told that the court had allowed the meeting only for Saturday."
