R K Sharma remanded to
10 days police custody

R K Sharma, prime suspect in the murder of Indian Express journalist Shivani Bhatnagar, was on Saturday remanded to police custody till October 8 by a Delhi court.

He had been produced in the court of Metropolitan magistrate J P Narain in Karkardooma by the Delhi police as per the direction of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Sarita Gupta in Ambala, where the Haryana cadre IPS officer had surrendered on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, Sharma had undergone a medical examination in Ambala as per the CJM's orders. The examination had been sought by Sharma's counsel.

Later, Sharma was driven down from Ambala amid heavy security. He was escorted to court No 27 by his lawyer, wife Madhu and two daughters.

The judge heard Sharma's submission for almost half an hour during which he pleaded that the Delhi police had levelled wild allegations against him.

"They (Delhi police) have termed me as an absconder. It is not right," he said.

"I was trying to seek legal remedy," he said explained his absence since August 3, when the Delhi police was trying to apprehend him.

Sharma's counsel R K Naseem later told reporters that the judge allayed Sharma's apprehension regarding torture by the Delhi police.

"He (Sharma) will be bold enough to reveal everything (of what he knows about the Shivani Bhatnagar case)," Naseem said.
