JKLF militant, two others get
7 years in jail

Special Judge S N Dhingra sentenced Mohammed Asgar Konshi (JKLF), Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Haryana and Gurinderjit Singh of Punjab for planning to carry out blasts in India by joining hands with the JKLF and underworld don Chhota Shakeel.

Finding the trio guilty under the Explosives Substance Act, the court said, "None of the accused had come forward with any explanation... as to why they had gathered in Delhi and with what intention the explosive substance was being delivered".

"Telephone calls by the accused in Pakistan and Dubai through Chhota Shakeel gang and JKLF chief Bilal Beg show that these accused persons had nefarious designs," it said.

The Delhi police had arrested them on May 21, 2001, while they were exchanging huge quantities of explosives, remote control devices and detonators near Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.

The police had alleged that Konshi had received militant training in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Rejecting the plea for leniency, the court said, "The persons who had intended to commit terrorist activities and planned to kill innocent persons do not deserve sympathy."

They had links with terrorists and had planned to strike in Delhi and other parts of country, and if they had succeeded several innocent lives might have been lost, it observed.
