Vidharbha regions

A Correspondent in Mumbai

Heavy rains since Sunday have resulted in floods in Maharashtra's Marathwada and Vidharbha regions, claimed 35 lives and necessitated the evacuation of about 20,000 persons.

Nanded, Parbhani and Hingoli in the Marathwada region and Yavatmal, Akola, Washim and Buldhana districts in the Vidharbha region have been the worst hit with 18 deaths in Buldhana district alone, sources said.

Indian Air Force copters have joined the state administration in rescue and relief efforts.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is expected to tour the affected areas on September 6.
