J&K polls: Ladakh UT Front bags two seats

Chief Electoral Officer Pramod Jain said Nawang Rigzin and Sonam Wanchuk Narboo were the only candidates left in the fray from Leh and Nobra constituencies respectively after the withdrawals.

Both of them had filed their nominations as independents, he said.

Narboo's victory was certain, as no other candidate had filed nomination. Rigzin's win was facilitated by two independents opting out of the contest.

Unopposed elections are not new in Jammu and Kashmir. In the first assembly polls in 1957, as many as 43 candidates, mostly from Kashmir, were declared elected unopposed.

In the 1962 elections, the number decreased to 34, while 22 candidates were declared elected unopposed in '67.

In 1972, five candidates were declared elected unopposed.
