Manipulations in J&K voters' list: Panthers Party

The Panthers Party on Monday alleged "large-scale manipulations" in voters' list and expressed doubts that the assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir would be "free and fair" under the present dispensation.

"The situation in Jammu and Kashmir is worse than that in Gujarat. More than five lakh voters in the state are displaced and have no constituencies," its president Bhim Singh said in New Delhi.

The elections were being conducted on the basis of the voters' list prepared in 1998, he said, and added that thousands of dead people figured in the rolls.

He also said that 85 per cent of the people in Jammu region knew only Hindi whereas the electoral rolls were in Urdu.

The Panthers Party would, however, field candidates in 60 of the 87 constituencies, he said.

Attacking Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, Singh said under his administration holding of "free and fair" polls, as had been announced by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, were "not possible".

"Farooq is more anti-national than [the] Hurriyat," he said.
