Mumbai to get country's first double-decker flyover

The first double-decker flyover of the country will come up in Mumbai soon.

It will connect the central suburbs of Kurla to the western suburbs.

Construction for the proposed flyover, valued at Rs 180 crore [approximately $37.11 million], is to begin in May 2003.

Minister of State for Housing Nawab Mallick, who visited the site on Monday, said once the flyover is completed, it would ease traffic congestion to a large extent.

The flyover will be a direct surface link between the east and west sections of Kurla suburbs and the western suburbs. It will save fuel, reduce pollution and ensure safe passage for pedestrians.

The proposed flyover forms part of the Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road to be implemented under the Phase-I of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project.

People living in nearly 3,100 hutments will be provided alternative permanent houses near Chembur in lieu of acquisition of land for the flyover.

The World Bank financed 80 per cent of the cost of the flyover and the remaining 20 per cent is being borne by the state government.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation will be the nodal agency for the project.

MMRDA Commissioner Ajit Warty, Joint Commissioner T Chandrashekhar and other prominent social workers were also present at the site.
