Bhujbal keen to press charges under section 304 against Salman

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Monday said the state is keen to press charges against actor Salman Khan in the hit-and-run case under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.

He also said a police probe into the case revealed Salman was driving the car without a licence after consuming alcohol beyond the permissible limit.

Bhujbal said Salman had also failed to provide satisfactory answers about the ownership of the car, which itself constituted an offence under section 41 of the IPC.

The actor had earlier claimed a man based in Kerala owned the car, but the police failed to trace any such person, Bhujbal said.

He said the Salman case brought to the fore the need for modification of the Motor Vehicles Act, which has become obsolete.

Bhujbal said he has sought the advice of the state's legal department on modification of the law and has also communicated to the central government the need for it and for harsher punishment against those found involved in reckless driving.

Section 304A deals with a bailable offence and requires a deposit of mere Rs 950 by the offender.

He refused to comment on charges of 'police lapse' during the initial stage of the probe, saying the matter would become clearer after the submission of the probe report by the Joint Commissioner of Police Javed Ahmad.
