Deuba govt sacked, king assumes executive powers

Surendra Phuyal in Kathmandu

Nepal's King Gyanendra late on Friday evening dismissed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's government saying it was incapable of holding general election next month. The king has temporarily assumed all executive powers.

The surprise development came a day after Deuba's cabinet decided to defer the general election scheduled for November 13 in view of the deteriorating security situation in the country.

The deposed prime minister and top political leaders have expressed shock at the king's move.

In a televised address to the nation, the monarch declared that an interim government would be formed within five days and said he had dismissed Deuba's government in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution.

The king has asked all political parties to recommend their representatives within five days to form the new government.
