Salman exempted from court appearance in hit-and-run case

A Mumbai local court exempted film actor Salman Khan from appearance in the hit-and-run case on Saturday even as the matter was deferred to December 19 for transferring it to the sessions court for trial.

Salman's lawyer H S Anand urged the actor's exemption for the day on the ground that he was busy and prosecutor Varsha Doshi did not object to his plea.

In an earlier development, the police returned Salman's passport after the actor urged that he wished to go to New Zealand for a film shooting on November 21.

Earlier, while granting bail to Salman, a sessions court had directed him to deposit his passport and take it when he wanted to go abroad.

Salman had rammed his vehicle into a bakery on September 28 killing one person and injuring four others. He was arrested on the same day.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, the Mumbai high court had ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs 19 lakh to the victims, which he deposited with the registrar of the court.

Following public outcry, the police remanded him to custody on October 7, and booked him under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Salman has now pleaded that the Toyota Land Cruiser, allegedly driven by him on the ill-fated day, be returned.

The police has objected saying the vehicle is registered in the name of Abdul Rahman.
