Men killed in Delhi mall got funds from ISI operative

The Mumbai police is trying to nab a suspected Inter-Services Intelligence operative, who allegedly paid money to the two men who were killed in an encounter in Delhi's Ansal Plaza shopping mall, crime branch sources said on Thursday.

The funds, diverted through hawala channels, were allegedly provided to the terrorists a couple of months ago to target a Union minister and carry out subversive activities in Delhi and other prominent cities across the country, the sources said.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sridhar Wagal said, "The Delhi police is investigating the case and I would not like to comment upon it."

But an official admitted that the police have provided information sought by their counterparts in Delhi.

Diaries recovered from one of the slain terrorists, Dawood Ahmed, indicated that he had visited Mumbai recently and stayed at hotels in Mumbra and Bhayander in neighbouring Thane district, the sources said.

Ahmed left for Delhi immediately after receiving funds from the ISI operative, they added.

Wagal said the police had "some information about subversive activities during Diwali and we took utmost precaution to avert any untoward incident".

The Delhi police, on its part, despatched a team to Jammu and Kashmir after examination of a mobile phone used by the terrorists revealed that three Pakistani numbers had been called from it.

The SIM card used in the mobile was bought from a shop in south Delhi on the basis of identification papers issued in J&K, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Ashok Chand said.

"The authenticity of the identification documents is being verified," he said.

The car used by the terrorists to reach the mall has been traced to one Mohammed Gulrez.

Gulrez has been examined, he said, adding that investigations have revealed that he had bought the car in February this year from Lucknow.

A report of car theft had been lodged in Tilak Nagar area of west Delhi in July this year. The vehicle, which had an Uttar Pradesh registration number (UP 12B 9326) etched on one of its windshields, had a Delhi number plate (DL 8CB 3241) on its front and rear.

A team, which is camping in Uttar Pradesh, is trying to trace the original owner of the car, he said.

Meanwhile Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Neeraj Kumar said there is no "immediate plan" to conduct post-mortem on the bodies of the men and "a clearance from the external affairs ministry was awaited".

The police had said if there were no claimants to the body for 72 hours, it would conduct the post-mortem. The deadline passed off on Wednesday evening.

Sources said the delay was due to questions being raised about the authenticity of the encounter
