Musharraf favours crackdown
on militants active in Kashmir

Describing the situation on the Indo-Pak border grim, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has indicated that the time for crackdown against militants active in Kashmir has come as they can't be allowed to play with the fate of the country.

According some accounts of Musharraf's meeting with editors of leading Pakistani newspapers on Wednesday, the President said India and Pakistan were close to a war now than they were in the immediate aftermath of the December 13 attack on the Indian Parliament.

Musharraf said that the intense diplomatic activity currently on was evidence of the world's desire to prevent a war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

At the meeting, the president also sought views of the journalists about Pakistan's involvement in Kashmir.

While a small minority held the view that Pakistan should continue to support the 'jehad' against India, the majority opined that he should clamp down on terrorism.

Though Musharraf did not divulge his views on the issue at the meeting, an official press statement issued in the evening said no terrorist activity would be allowed on Pakistani soil.

Referring to the statement, an editor who took part in the meeting said there could be no better assurance to the international community about Pakistan's desire to initiate peace dialogue with India.
