Unified Command meet
begins in Srinagar

With Indian and Pakistani troops eye-ball to eye-ball along the border, the Unified Command, which supervises and coordinates anti-militant operations in Kashmir, began an important meeting in Srinagar on Thursday morning.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is presiding over the meeting for the first time since the formation of this special command comprising the army, paramilitary forces, police and Central and state intelligence agencies in 1996.

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Defence Minister George Fernandes are also attending the meeting at the International Convention Complex on the banks of Dal Lake.

While Fernandes was already in Srinagar along with the prime minister, Advani arrived in the morning.
