Vajpayee arrives in Srinagar, to
address troops in Kupwara

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday on the second leg of his three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir amidst unprecedented security and a bandh call given by the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference.

Vajpayee is scheduled to address over 1,000 troops at Kupwara, near the Line of Control, later in the day.

The prime minister is also likely to join the security personnel at a 'barakhana' (lunch).

Police check-posts have been set up at every 500 metres in Srinagar and patrolling has been intensified on the routes Vajpayee is expected to take, a senior police official said.

Vajpayee would chair a meeting of the Unified Command on Thursday. Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani will also attend the meeting.
