Ahmedabad police commissioner shifted; Muslim OSD to Gill

Under attack for its handling of the continuing violence in Ahmedabad city, the Gujarat government on Friday shunted out Commissioner P C Pande as part of a major shake-up of the police force.

The government also appointed a senior Muslim police official to assist supercop K P S Gill, security advisor to Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

In an apparent bid to instil confidence among the minorities, A I Syed, Joint Director of the State Police Academy, has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty to Gill in addition to his responsibilities in the current post.

At a meeting held by Modi late Thursday night, it was decided to shift Pande in "public interest" and to appoint Additional Director General of police, CID (Crime), K R Kaushik as the new city police chief.

Pande, who attracted criticism for his remarks at the height of the post-Godhra violence that the policemen were also affected by the prevailing prejudices, will take the place of A K Bhargava as ADG, Arms Unit and the latter will take over from Kaushik.

The shake-up involves 14 senior officials
