ISI paid Sheikh Omar's legal fees: Pak official

In a damning disclosure, a Pakistani official has said that the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) paid the legal fees for Sheikh Omar Saeed when he was serving a jail term in India on charges of kidnapping foreign tourists in Kashmir in 1994.

The fees were paid in Britain by the ISI station chief in Pakistan's London embassy, the unnamed Pakistani official disclosed to the Washington Post. The ISI operative was also not named.

The ISI-Omar links were further confirmed when he emerged as a chief suspect in the Daniel Pearl case and surrendered in the presence of Ejaz Shah, a former top ISI official who is now home secretary in the Punjab provincial government, the report said.

The 'capture' of Omar had aroused suspicion in Washington because the surrender was kept secret for almost a week till President Pervez Musharraf met US President George W Bush.

Shortly before their meeting, Pakistan announced that Omar had been caught.

Another Pakistani official said the bomb threats, which led to Omar's trial being moved to Hyderabad from Karachi, came from militants associated with the Jaish-e-Mohammed, which is active in Kashmir.
