Gill appointed Modi's security advisor

K P S Gill, well known for leading anti-terrorist operations in Punjab, was on Thursday appointed security advisor to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to bolster efforts to check the communal violence in the state.

Gill, who had successfully tackled communal incidents during his tenure as Assam police chief, is likely to assume his new office on Friday, official sources said.

The Centre had suggested Gill's name to the state government, the sources said.

Gill, who has enormous experience in dealing with complex law and order problem, is expected to co-ordinate with the chief minister's office, the home department and the state police to chalk out effective strategies to combat communal strife, the sources said.

He is also expected to assist in deployment of police and paramilitary forces.

The sources said the Centre was also considering appointing a relief commissioner for gearing up relief and rehabilitation operations in the riot-torn state.
