Narendra Modi mum on reports of K P S Gill's appointment

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday refused to confirm or deny reports appearing in some leading newspapers that K P S Gill, former director general of the Punjab police, is being sent as a security adviser to Gujarat.

"I am rushing out for a meeting. Please call me later," was all Modi was willing to say when asked if he had sought the appointment of Gill to help contain the violence in the state.

Such appointments are normally made in a state that is under President's rule. Hence, the reports about Gill's appointment came as a surprise to most security experts in the capital.

Gill could not be contacted as he was away in Mussoorie and is expected to return to the capital later in the night.

Sources in the Union home ministry too were tight-lipped about the reports.

According to the news reports, Gill is expected to take charge of his new assignment on May three.
