Anti-terror law to be used sparingly: Advani

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Tuesday said the anti-terrorism law would be used "sparingly" and justified the holding of the joint sitting of Parliament for its passage.

Differences between the two Houses "should not mean freezing of decisions," Advani told reporters after the Bill was passed.

"To say that this (calling of a joint sitting) is an abuse of Constitutional provisions is something unacceptable," Advani asserted, adding that Article 108 of the Constitution which provided for convening of such a sitting was meant to "resolve differences."

Stating that only about a hundred persons had so far been arrested under POTO in different parts of the country, he claimed the new law would be applied "sparingly" and the government does not have "any secret agenda to use it against any community or section of society."
