POT bill's passage is certain, says Vajpayee

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said on Monday that the passage of the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Bill to replace the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance at the joint sitting of Parliament on Tuesday was a "certainty".

He, however, said "everybody" would have to ensure that the provisions of the new anti-terrorism law were not misused.

"The passage of POTO tomorrow is a certainty," Vajpayee told a press conference in Simla.

"The Congress party should realise," he said, "that its opposition to POTO is not only not in the national interest, but is also not in the interest of the Congress party itself."

Replying to a question on the decision taken by the Trinamool Congress, a member of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, to abstain from the sitting, Vajpayee said they had taken the stand in view of the problems in Mamata Banerjee's home state, West Bengal.

"They feel the West Bengal government may use the legislation against them," he explained, but said, "There are no reasons for such an apprehension. Everybody will have to see that this is not misused."
