President K R Narayanan on Friday summoned a joint sitting of Parliament on March 26 to deliberate and vote on the bill seeking ratification of the Prevention of Terrorism (Second) Ordinance, 2002.
Earlier on Friday morning, the government recommended to President K R Narayanan a joint session of both Houses of Parliament to be convened, after the POT Bill was defeated in the Rajya Sabha by a margin of 15 votes on Thursday night.
Talking to reporters after the Bill was defeated, Mahajan said, "The voting was on expected lines barring a few surprises."
Mahajan claimed that the government managed to reduce the margin of defeat 'to a considerable extent'.
During the crucial voting session, the three-member National Conference slipped out of the House at the last minute indicating growing differences in the ruling National Democratic Alliance.
Mahajan said that the National Conference did not intimate the government about its decision to absent itself during voting.
The party had voted for POT Bill in the Lok Sabha a few days ago.
