Three more killed as Gujarat
limps back to normalcy

At least three people were killed in police firing and stabbing incidents in Surat and Santarampur town of Panchmahal district late on Monday night, even as other parts of the violence-ravaged Gujarat remained peaceful but tense.

Two tribals were killed when police opened fire to prevent a crowd from looting and setting fire to shops at Santarampur, senior police officers said.

One person was stabbed fatally in Surat city.

Other parts of the state, including Ahmedabad, remained peaceful but tense. Curfew continued in about 40 cities and towns.

In Ahmedabad, curfew was lifted from seven police station areas and was relaxed in four -- Vejalpur, Bapunagar, Rakhial and Gomtipur.

The toll in the five-day-long communal frenzy in the state has now gone up to 532, with Ahmedabad alone accounting for 242 deaths.

At least 97 people were killed in police firing in the state.
