Advani reviews Gujarat situation; asks govt to be tough

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Sunday reviewed the law and order situation in Gujarat following the unprecedented communal violence that rocked the state since the Godhra carnage on February 27.

Advani, who arrived on Sunday morning, reviewed the steps taken by state government to restore peace and communal harmony in the state.

The home minister held meetings with Chief Minister Narendra Modi and senior civil, police and military officials and visited the Civil Hospital and affected areas of Bapunagar, Naroda and Meghaninagar, official sources said.

Advani also visited the area where former Congress Member of Parliament Ehsan Jaffrey and 19 members of his family were charred to death.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain and Union Home Secretary Kamal Pande accompanied the home minister.

Advani also visited the Godhra railway station where four bogies of the Sabarmati Express were set on fire killing 58 people.

Speaking to the mediapersons after his tour, Advani said it was the government's responsibility to apprehend the 'key planner' of the Godhra carnage, which subsequently sparked off unprecedented communal violence in Gujarat.

"Those who are guilty and the key planner of the entire act should be apprehended," Advani said.

Advani said that the government had three primary responsibilities regarding the Godhra mayhem and subsequent spread of violence in the state.

"First, we have to arrest the guilty, second, to prevent recurrence of any kind of violence and third, to ensure peace and security to all sections of people," Advani said.

Advani also expressed condolences to the members of the bereaved family.
