Shabana Azmi not allowed to visit riot-hit areas of Gujarat

Opposition leaders in Parliament, including Rajya Sabha member Shabana Azmi and Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury, were on Saturday denied permission to visit the riot-hit areas of Gujarat.

"We could not have allowed them to visit the spots they wanted. Allowing them to visit sensitive areas like Vatva, Naroda and Juhapura would have only worsened the situation," the police said.

The two were accompanied by Samajwadi Party leaders Amar Singh and Raj Babbar.

The crowds would have defied prohibitory orders and spilled onto the streets to see the glamorous figures, they said.

"In the past, the crowds have been hostile to several politicians during such incidents," they added.
