Curfew in parts of Surat, situation under control

Amit Suthariya in Surat

Curfew has been clamped in five police station areas in Surat and cable operators have been told to shut down operations following overnight violence.

The areas where curfew has been clamped are Chowk Bazar, Atwa Lines, Randher, Mahiderpura and Salabatpura.

Shops and business establishments in this city in south Gujarat have downed shutters fearing violence.

Though the city is tense, the security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), have the situation under control.

Police sources said that a press photographer had a narrow escape when RAF personnel rescued him from a mob, which was about to burn him alive in the Bade Na Chakla area.
