Bandh observed in some Karnataka towns

Police resorted to a lathi-charge at Bantwal in South Kanara, Malur in Kolar and Muddebihal in Bagalkot districts when protestors allegedly turned violent, according to reports reaching the police headquarters in Bangalore.

In Bantwal, police chased away VHP and Bajrang Dal activists who indulged in stone-pelting and arrested twenty persons, police said.

A 4000-strong group took out a procession in Melur, which observed a bandh, sources said. The mob turned violent while returning after submitting a memorandum to the tehsildar, demanding action against culprits of the Godhra train massacre, they said.

However, police chased them away and clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The response to the bandh was partial in Muddebihal town where also police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse protestors, police said.

In Kolar, Mulabagil, Shiralakoppa, Sagara, Thirthahalli and Basavakalyana towns, the response to the bandh was partial, the sources added.
