Almost all trains to Mumbai have been affected because of the heavy rain that has lashed the city for the past 36 hours.
On the Western line nearly 25 outstation trains, including the Rajdhani and August Kranti Express from New Delhi, have been affected.
"So far no outstation train can go beyond Virar because of water clogging at Vaitarna and Palghar," said a Western Railway official on Thursday.
He, however, added that the situation could change by the Thursday evening as restoration work is in full swing.
The local trains, however, are only 10-15 minutes late, Central, Western and Harbour Railway officials confirmed.
On Wednesday evening, trains were held up before Virar on the Western Railway sector and on the Central line the trains could not run beyond Karjat and Kalyan because of water clogging.
On the Central line, the Pawan Express is late by five hours and will leave at 1610 hours in the evening.
The Indrayani and Shatabdi, which go to Pune, have been cancelled. However, the Sinhagad Express and Deccan Queen, which leave for Pune in the evening, are on schedule.
The Chennai Mail, which was supposed to leave on Wednesday night at 2320 hours, left on Thursday at 0830 hours.
"The situation is much better than yesterday as most of the trains were halted before Kalyan and Karjat," said a Central Railway spokesperson. "We hope to restore all our trains to normal routine by this evening."
