Complaint against proposed animal sacrifice by Nepal monarch

Two days before King Gyanendra is to visit the famous Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, a controversy has arisen over the proposed animal sacrifice by the Nepalese royal family with an animal rights body lodging a complaint with the police.

In separate letters to the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Union Minister of State for Animal Welfare Maneka Gandhi and the Kamrup deputy commissioner, the People for Animals organisation pointed out that animal sacrifice was illegal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Both the priests as well as the owner of the animal can be arrested, fined and jailed up to five years, Sangeeta Goswami, the chairperson of the Assam unit of the organisation, wrote.

The People for Animals has lodged a general complaint with the Jalukbari police station under which the Kamakhya temple falls, Dharmeswar Gogoi, officer-in-charge of the police station, said.

Gogoi said he would first examine the complaint and before considering any action.

The royal couple is on Thursday scheduled to sacrifice a buffalo for the well-being of the family, which is still haunted by last year's palace massacre.

The priest of the royal family has already acquired two buffaloes from Darrang district out of which one would be sacrificed.
