Launching a major offensive against the Maoists, Nepalese security forces killed 28 rebels in fresh encounters across the country as the rebel toll in four days of clashes rose to 88, the defence ministry said on Sunday.
Eleven terrorists were gunned down in a forest near Mahadevpuri in Banke district on Saturday, Defence Ministry spokesman Bhupendra Prasad Poudyal said.
Some of those killed have been identified as district committee members of the Maoists. At least six armed rebels, including two women, were killed in exchange of fire between security forces and Maoists in Okhaldhunga district on Sunday night, the spokesman said.
While three rebels were killed in Nayabasti in Dang district, four ultras were killed in Namla in Lamjung district, and another four in Ramechhap district in separate encounters, the official said, adding two terrorists were also arrested from Okhaldhunga district.
Defence ministry sources said 50 rebels were killed in Thursday night's exchange with security forces in Khara area of Rukum district, 400 km west of Kathmandu, they said.
An armyman was killed and another injured when the Maoists suddenly attacked an army patrolling team on Thursday.
Ten other Maoists were killed on Thursday in clashes with the army in five different districts across Nepal. Other rebels were killed in Nuwakot, Pyuthan and Rolpa districts.
