National Conference appeals to India, Pak to initiate dialogue

The National Conference on Sunday appealed to India and Pakistan to initiate a 'meaningful dialogue' to resolve outstanding issues between them and appreciated the efforts of international community to persuade both the countries to come to the negotiation table.

"We make a fervent and sincere appeal to both countries that they should find a way to resolve the conflict and initiate a meaningful dialogue," the party said in its political resolution adopted at a special session held in Srinagar after 18 years.

Expressing grave concern over the events which have brought the sub-continent to the 'brink of a war', it said, "If the present tension lead to a nuclear war, then this paradise on earth will suffer unimaginable devastation."

The resolution appreciated and 'fully supported' the efforts of international community to persuade the two countries to come to the negotiation table and resolve their differences amicably.

It said, "NC reiterates its consistent stand that wars do not solve issues but make them more complicated. These only add to the miseries of innocent people."

"We firmly believe that both neighbours must avoid war and devote their energies for the welfare of their peoples," the resolution added.

The resolution said NC strongly felt that friendly relations between India and Pakistan could guarantee peace, prosperity and bright future for the peoples of the two countries.

"With the dark clouds of war looming over, our party expresses its deep pain and anguish over the atmosphere of distrust, narrow-mindedness and communal prejudices which have overtaken our beloved mother land. It is this environment that has created the avoidable Ayodhya episode in the first instance, culminating in the destruction of the Babri Masjid and subsequent disharmony and bloodshed," it said. "Gujarat manifested even more regrettable and darker dimensions. Our country has always been a colourful mosaic of cultural diversity, of races, nationalities, faiths and languages."

"As and when we demonstrated unity, we wrote luminous chapters of our history. Unity in diversity and diversity in unity has been our major source of strength."

"By drifting from this path, the country will face serious consequences," it warned and said the NC has always opposed such tendencies.
