Nepali Congress overturns Deuba's expulsion

Shirish B Pradhan in Kathmandu

The Nepali Congress on Tuesday overturned an order expelling caretaker Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba from the party and decided to remove his arch-rival Girija Prasad Koirala as party president.

The party, at its 10th general convention called by the prime minister, agreed to scrap Koirala's decision to expel Deuba for three years for recommending dissolution of parliament and calling for elections in November.

Minister for Construction and Physical Planning Chiranjivi Wagle said a new party president would be chosen on Wednesday.

Koirala, however, said the convention was illegal as Deuba, who was expelled, had no right to call the meeting.

Prominent party leaders, including former deputy prime minister Ramchandra Poudyal and Speaker of the House of Representative Taranath Ranabhat, kept away from the meeting.

They were among the leaders who tried to broker a reconciliation between Deuba and Koirala.
