Krishan Kant never wore anything except for the five pairs of kurta-pyjama made from the yarn spun by his mother.
On his birthday on February 28 every year, Kant's mother Satyawati (96) used to present him with five pairs of kurta-pyjama, made from the yarn she prepared on the manual charkha (spinning wheel), family sources said.
Kant's mother used to spin the wheel for two hours daily.
Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Najma Heptulla recalled that the last time she met Kant, he had discussed the problem his mother faced in walking due to arthritis, a problem afflicting Najma's mother as well.
Kant was not only close to his mother, but also his mother-in-law, who wept bitterly as she saw his mortal remains lying in state in the drawing room of the Vice-President's House.
Placed near his body was a portrait of a smiling Kant sitting on a chair on the lawns of his house in his trademark kurta-pyjama and a sleeveless khadi jacket.
