Police fired in the air after a lathicharge failed to disperse a mob, which attacked a superintendent of police at Bhulu in Dhanbad, Director General of Police R R Prasad said in Ranchi.
A large number of shops were damaged by pro and anti-domicile supporters prompting the police to take nearly 500 persons into custody, he said.
Bandh supporters stoned the Kalpana cinema hall owned by state Urban Development minister Baccha Singh, he said.
Prasad said BJP MP Salkhan Murmum, the chief convenor of the Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan who was arrested in the morning for attempting to enforce the bandh was released in the evening.
Home Secretary Susma Singh told PTI that vandalism also took place at Giridih and Dhanbad where shops were damaged by bandh supporters.
A Jamshedpur report quoting the East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Khare said several police personnel, including the officers-in-charge of Bagbera and Bistupur police stations Dhananjay Singh and Abhay Narayan Singh were among over a dozen injured in stone-throwing incidents.
One person was injured near Station Chowk when police opened fired to disperse warring groups, she said.
Khare said police swung into action when bandh supporters began attacking residential areas near the station after regrouping themselves.
Khare said pro-bandh activists put up roadblocks at Sivildanga, Palasboni and Baliguma villages on National Highway 33 in East Singhbhum district.
Police also fired several rounds in the air near Adityapur Industrial Area Development Authority office in Sareikela-Kharasuan district to scare away mobs, police sources said.
Police lathicharged rival groups in Govindpur, a non-adivasi dominated area, where bandh supporters gheraoed the police station.
At Dhanbad, Inspector General of Police (Railways) Niaz Ahmed said train services were disrupted with bandh supporters stoning the Rajdhani Express.
The services, however, were restored after two hours.
Train services in the Chakradharpur division was also affected.
