Yasin Malik re-arrested after getting bail in POTA case

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammed Yasin Malik was re-arrested on Saturday afternoon under the Public Safety Act within minutes of his release in a case under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Director General of Police Ashok Kumar Suri said Malik was re-arrested under the PSA for 'anti-national activities'.

A special POTA court presided over by P N Razdan had released Malik on health grounds on a surety of Rs 1,00,000 (approximately US $2,040).

The JKLF chief is reportedly suffering from a kidney ailment. A medical board constituted by the state government to examine him in Kot Bhalwal jail had recommended that he undergo a kidney scan soon.

Since no such facility is available in Jammu & Kashmir, counsel for Malik had sought his release on bail so that he could go to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi for the purpose.

Malik was arrested on March 25 for allegedly receiving funds through the illegal havala channel, following the arrest of two persons carrying US $100,000 allegedly meant for him.
