Campaign against Gujarat riots
launched in UK

Several South Asian women's organisations have launched a joint campaign in Britain to highlight the "planned, premeditated and cold-blooded atrocities" committed against women during the recent violence in Gujarat.

Among other things, they have demanded de-recognition of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad as a charitable organisation in Britain because of its perceived role during the Gujarat riots.

A spokeswoman of the campaign said on Thursday that they would meet in ten days to chalk out future programmes, including ways and means of approaching the United Nations to get justice for the victims of violence.

Those in the forefront of the campaign include Asiya Sareshwala (Indian Council of Muslims), Bina Fernandez (Forum Against Oppression of Women, India), Zubaida Motala (South Asia Solidarity Group), and Gita Sahgal (Women Against Fundamentalism).

Asiya, who spoke about her first-hand experience of communal violence in Mumbai in 1992 and in Ahmedabad recently, urged Muslim women to come out and take to the street against the atrocities.
