Haryana to approach Supreme Court
on SYL construction issue

In a significant development, the Haryana government on Wednesday decided to approach the Supreme Court seeking completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal by the Punjab government within a fixed time frame.

The decision to approach the Supreme Court was taken in a meeting in Chandigarh specially convened by Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala on Wednesday to review the functioning of canals in the state.

He expressed serious concern over the delay being made by the Punjab government in completing the SYL canal despite the Supreme Court in its January 15 verdict laying down a time frame, denying Haryana its share of the Ravi-Beas river waters.

Chautala directed the advocate general of Haryana to decide the next course of action in consultation with legal experts.

He also directed Chander Singh, financial commissioner and principal secretary (irrigation), to complete repair work on a 91 km long stretch of the SYL canal passing through Haryana on a war-footing.
