In his resignation letter faxed to President K R Narayanan and the UPSC chairman on Tuesday, Karnik said he had quit voluntarily and on moral grounds to maintain the dignity of the UPSC, his lawyer Satish Maneshinde told PTI in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Karnik also said that he had been falsely implicated in the MPSC scam.
UPSC chairman P C Hota on Wednesday told PTI in Delhi that Karnik's resignation letter has been forwarded to the ministry of personnel and that President K R Narayanan has been recommended to accept the same.
Karnik, former chairman of the MPSC, was arrested on July 14 by the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau on the charge of conspiring with seven others to manipulate answer papers of the MPSC examination in 1999 thereby favouring candidates in lieu of illegal gratification.
According to the ACB, 398 answer sheets were replaced by the accused who broke open the MPSC's office to tamper with the documents.
Other accused are MPSC's Controller of Examination Sudhakar Shirode, suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Baban Kadam, alleged conduit Manisha Nichat, MPSC canteen boy Atmaram Karge, computer expert Farooq Karge, two employees of the state secretariat Sunil Patil and Eknath Vezre.
Karnik was admitted to the government-owned J.J hospital on Monday after he complained of chest pain.
He has been remanded to police custody till July 20 by a special court, but continues to remain in the hospital.
