Staines murder accused Dara Singh on hunger strike

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

All the accused persons in the 1999 Graham Staines murder case, including the prime accused Dara Singh, are on a hunger strike in the Jharpada jail at Bhubaneswar demanding the transfer of their case to some other court, their lawyer Syamananda Mohapatra said on Monday afternoon.

They have said this in a written petition, which has been filed by them in the Orissa high court, Mohapatra told rediff.com. They have not taken any food since last Saturday, he claimed.

"Some of them have become sick and are undergoing treatment, as a result of which they could not appear before the district and session judge of Khurda where the trial was scheduled on Monday," he said.

The trial has been adjourned to Tuesday, he said.

Singh and other accused have expressed 'dissatisfaction' over the manner, in which the trial has been conducted, claiming that the 'hearing is partial'.
