As rains continued to elude Punjab and Haryana for the third consecutive day on Monday, temperatures witnessed a further increase with Hisar once again turning out to be the hottest place in the plains.

The maximum temperature at Hisar shot up by three degrees above normal to 40.9 degrees Celsius while Ambala had a high of 37.1 degrees Celsius, the meteorological office in Chandigarh said.

In Punjab, the mercury at Amritsar rose by two degrees from the normal of 38.6 degrees Celsius.

Ludhiana and Patiala fared slightly better recording near similar highs of 36.2 degrees Celsius and 36.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Chandigarh also braved a three degree-above-normal high at 38.0 degrees Celsius. There has been very little rainfall in the two states and the city after the south-west monsoon arrived on Thursday last.

In neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, barring in Pandoh, no fresh rains have been reported in the state during the past 24 hours, according to the data available with the meteorological office.

Shimla recorded a high of 25.0 degrees Celsius on Monday while the highest temperatures recorded at Sundernagar and Bhuntar towns were 35.0 degrees Celsius and 33.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The meteorological office has forecast light to moderate rain at isolated places in Punjab and Himachal and mainly sunny days in Himachal during the next 48 hours.
