Afghanistan's vice-president assassinated

Haji Abdul Qadir, one of Afghanistan's three vice-presidents, was on Saturday assassinated outside his office in Kabul, Interior Minister Taj Mohammad Wardak said.Haji Abdul Qadir

Qadir, a Pushtoon from the Northern Alliance who was also the public works minister and governor of Nangarhar, was shot dead by two gunmen as he drove into his office compound, Kabul police chief Basir Salangi told reporters.

Around 36 rounds were fired at Qadir's car, smashing the windscreen and riddling its side with holes, he said.

Ten guards appointed by Abdul Khaliq Fazal, Qadir's predecessor at the public works ministry, have been arrested, Salangi said.

Officers from the International Security Assistance Force, in Kabul to help maintain the peace, said they were investigating the matter.

In New Delhi, an external affairs ministry spokesperson described the killing as "a very unfortunate development".
