Funding militancy: Police arrest two persons, including LeT militant

In the continuing crackdown on funding channels of militant outfits in Jammu and Kashmir, the Delhi police has arrested two persons, including a militant of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT), and seized Rs 700,000 meant for the outfit.

The arrests by the special cell of the Delhi police followed definite information that Harbans Singh, a hawala dealer, was to hand over a cash consignment to a Lashkar militant in Connaught Place.

A trap was laid and Singh was caught handing over the money to LeT militant Mohammed Ayub Mir at the busy market hub on Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday.

Though the source of the money is yet to established, police claimed that it had been routed by Pakistan-based top brass of the militant outfit for its cadre in Jammu and Kashmir.

The two have been booked under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and would soon be produced in court, police said.

In recent times, security agencies have managed to effectively clamp down on funds meant for militants beginning with the arrest of JKLF chief Yasin Malik followed by that of fire-brand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Last week, four persons, including a former Hurriyat leader Mohammed Yakub Vakil, were arrested for providing slush money to the Al-Umar Mujahideen outfit.
