Advani's elevation will not revive BJP: Congress

The Congress said on Monday that Lal Kishenchand Advani's appointment as deputy prime minister and the Cabinet reshuffle heralded an erosion in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's authority.

However, it asserted that these changes would not revive the fortunes of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"The Cabinet reshuffle heralds the total eclipse of [the] NDA and total domination of [the] BJP. This can be understood by [the] mere fact that Home Minister L K Advani could not be made Deputy Prime Minister in 1998 but in 2002," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said.

He said the reshuffle denoted more the demotion of Vajpayee than promotion of Advani.

"We are not interested in personalities, but we are surely concerned about erosion of the august authority of prime minister... This country cannot have prime minister's authority eroded," he said.

He said this had happened because non-Hindutva parties had lost their bargaining leverage.
