70 polling officers suspended

Dehradun district authorities have suspended 70 polling officers for not turning up for a training programme to learn to handle Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), a top official said on Monday.

The district administration had organised a two-day special training programme for 500 polling officers regarding use of EVMs. Thirty-seven presiding officers of polling booths and 33 other polling officers remained absent without intimating the concerned authorities, District Magistrate Om Prakash said.

However, authorities did not take any action against four presiding officers who could not come to the workshop from Mussoorie due to road blockade following heavy snowfall, Prakash said.

The polling officers are being trained on use of EVMs for the February 14 assembly elections in Uttaranchal. PTI
