VHP-sponsored bandh begins in Gujarat; one killed in Baroda

The VHP-sponsored Gujarat bandh in protest against the attack on the Sabarmati Express at Godhra town on Wednesday, in which 58 people were killed and 43 others injured, began with reports of fresh incidents of stabbing in Baroda city early on Thursday morning.

An auto-rickshaw driver was stabbed to death by some unidentified persons in Karelibag area and the cleaner of a truck was injured after he was assaulted by some people in Pani Gate area of Baroda in the wee hours, police said in Baroda.

Indefinite curfew was imposed in the city from 0800 hours following the stabbing incidents, a senior police official said.

Curfew had been imposed in the six police station areas of the walled city and RAF and CISF companies have been deployed in sensitive areas, Police Commissioner Deen Dayal Tuteja said.

Indefinite curfew has also been imposed in Lunawada town of Panchmahal district after 0200 hours on Wednesday night following incidents of arson and looting, he said.

Meanwhile, indefinite curfew, imposed in Godhra town after the attack on the train on Wednesday, continued on Thursday without any relaxation.

No untoward incident was reported during the curfew so far, police said.

The situation had remained peaceful and under control in other parts of the state during the night, police said.

Educational institutions in the state would remain closed and all examinations have been cancelled by the authorities in view of the bandh.

As many as 40 persons were arrested by the police in connection with Wednesday's attack.

Meanwhile, a strict police bandobast has been ordered in Surat city and other areas in the district in view of the VHP bandh.

Except for a stray incident of stabbing of two youths in Gopipura area late on Wednesday night by some miscreants, the overall situation was reported to be well under control, police said on Thursday.

Leaders of various political parties have appealed to the people to maintain calm and disallow any rumour-monger or anti-social elements to cause disturbance during the bandh.
